Use of Shin Pads in Youth Football Policy

Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety and welfare of all children participating in football activities at Falmouth Community Youth Football Club, in line with the Laws of the Game and Football Association (FA) guidance.
Policy Statement
All players taking part in training sessions and matches must wear appropriate, full-sized shin pads. 

Size and Coverage: Players are advised to ensure a "good proportion of the shin area is covered" to maximize protection. 

Optimal Fit: A proper shin pad should generally cover the area from just below the knee to just above the ankle.

Mini, slip-in or undersized shin pads are not permitted at any age group within the club’s junior section.

This policy applies to:

• Training sessions
• Friendly matches
• Competitive fixtures
• Tournaments and festivals

What Is Not Permitted

The following are not acceptable:

• “Mini” or “micro” shin pads
• Shin pads that do not adequately cover the shin
• Shin pads worn without suitable football socks holding them securely in place

Reason for the Policy

Shin pads are a mandatory item of protective equipment under the Laws of the Game. Mini shin pads do not provide sufficient protection against:

• Kicks from other players
• Contact during tackles
• Accidental impact during play

As a club, we have a duty of care to take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of injury, particularly for children and young people whose bodies are still developing.


Role of Coaches and Match Officials

• Coaches and team officials are responsible for checking equipment before training and matches.
• Players wearing non-compliant shin pads will not be permitted to take part until suitable equipment is worn.
• Referees have the final authority on player equipment on match days.

Role of Parents and Carers

Parents and carers are asked to:

• Ensure their child arrives with appropriate shin pads for every session
• Support coaches and officials in enforcing this policy
• Speak to a coach if they are unsure whether equipment is suitable

Non-Compliance

Where a player arrives wearing mini shin pads:

• They will be asked to change into compliant shin pads
• If no suitable replacement is available, they may be unable to participate for that session

This decision will always be made in the interests of player safety.
ReviewThis policy will be reviewed annually or in response to changes in FA guidance.
